Health & Safety

Safety: A Core Value

Safety is more than just the number one priority at our locations: it is a core value. The health and safety of every employee is held in the highest regard and is ALWAYS our first concern. The success achieved in managing safety is directly proportional to the degree of employee involvement in the safety process. Our employees recognize that their active participation in injury and incident prevention is crucial to the success of the entire operation. Our safety culture relies on all levels of the organization performing proactively and displaying the appropriate safety behavior toward injury prevention. Every employee considers any safety-related incident to be unacceptable. Working safely is a daily responsibility and a never-ending job for each and every one of us.

Zero and Beyond

We at Climax Molybdenum Company use the vision of Zero and Beyond to achieve our safety goals. What does Zero and Beyond mean? ‘Zero’ means zero incidents, zero injuries and zero job-related illnesses. 'Beyond’ means reaching the goal and then going beyond it by sustaining zero and by taking safety awareness beyond the workplace into our homes and our communities.

Award-Winning Health and Safety Initiatives

For the year 2001, the Henderson Operations team received the prestigious James Douglas Health and Safety Award. This award recognizes the outstanding and/or sustained contributions by an individual or team to the safety, health and welfare of Freeport McMoRan Copper & Gold employees. Only one award is presented annually.

The Fort Madison, Iowa, conversion plant received a Chairman's Health and Safety Award for 2006 as well as 2002. This award was in recognition of zero recordable injuries and excellence in critical safety systems. In 2004, Fort Madison achieved a 9 year / 2 million employee-hours LTA free record. Additionally, Fort Madison has received Safety Commendation Awards from the Iowa / Illinois Safety Council. The plant received OHSAS 18001 certification in 2006.

The Climax team is proud of their safety accomplishments but realizes the real focus of attention must be on the tasks at hand. We will achieve and sustain Zero one minute at a time, one task at a time, one shift at a time, and one day at a time.
